How to Choose a Tax Consultant in Bali: 7 Things to Check
Choosing a tax consultant is like choosing a family doctor for your business. They will see your most sensitive financial data and be your first call when the tax office writes to you. Here are seven things to check, whether you run a villa, a restaurant, or a foreign-owned PMA company in Bali.
1. A practising licence
In Indonesia, tax consultants must hold a practising licence issued by the Ministry of Finance (PMK 111/2014 as amended by PMK 175/2022). It requires a Tax Consultant Certificate and membership of a registered association, and is renewed every two years. Ask to see it.
2. The right licence level
Licences come in levels A, B, and C. Broadly, level A covers individuals, level B adds companies, and level C adds international taxation, which matters for PMA companies and foreign taxpayers.
3. Experience in your industry
Villa taxation differs from retail or PMA taxation. A consultant who knows Bali’s tourism sector will understand regional tax (PBJT), online booking platform payouts, and seasonal cash flow.
4. Scope of services
Many tax problems start with messy books. A firm that handles tax and accounting together keeps your financial statements aligned with your returns. If you have staff or a PMA licence, payroll, licensing, and LKPM reporting under one roof save you from juggling vendors.
5. Communication
Good consultants explain the rules in plain language, in English if you prefer, reply on WhatsApp, and remind you before deadlines rather than after.
6. Honesty about risk
Be wary of anyone promising “zero tax” or “guaranteed safe” before looking at your situation.
7. Clear scope and fees
Ask for a written outline of what is included, what documents you must provide, delivery dates, and how fees are calculated.
